We had a water softener installed in our house. As part of the install, we had two hose bibs added that tap into the main. One of the hose bibbs is used to refill our pool with unsoftened water. The installer did not place the hose bibb next to the PVC line that fills the pool, per what we originally wanted.

We need to figure out a way to connect the PVC line to the hose bibb that is about 5 feet away. We were thinking of cutting the PVC at the soil line, attaching a PEX line to that, and then attaching the PEX to the hose bibb. Is there a better way to do this? My husband and and I are pretty handy. We live close to Dallas as far as weather goes. Thanks!

How about a simple 5 ft length of garden hose. It would have the standard female swivel at one end, to attach to the faucet, and on
the other would be whatever you need to attach to the existing fitting on the PVC. Hose fitting adapters are sold at every hardware
store.

I was looking on-line and it seems I can purchase a vacuum breaker to install at the faucet to prevent the back-flow. I noticed we have one on our old connection. They sell a $6 vacuum breaker and a $23 one that is similar to what we have now. Should I purchase the more expensive one?

City water or other public water? Then the higher standards apply I think. I am not a plumber.

Thanks. The installer has agreed to move the hose bibb to the pvc pipe. He will place it under our original hose bibb. We can easily lower the pvc pipe and reconnect. I will look for the more expensive back-flow preventer.

I did notice that the pvc hose adapter leaks at the swivel. Could I transition the pvc to brass so I can use a brass swivel that is less likely to leak, or is there a better brand of pvc hose adapter?

Edited to add: We are on city water. This is not a continuous pressure line. We manually turn the water on and off when we need to add water to the pool. Also, the pool fill pipe is higher than my pool line. I don’t know if you can see it in this picture.

How did you fill the pool before the water softener? If the PVC line to the pool ends higher than the pool deck and dumps the water into the pool like a faucet into a sink, then you have an air gap that requires no back flow preventer in my opinion. A cheap vacuum breaker is fine to add but all it will do is allow the PVC line to drain easier. If the PVC line goes to the pool and enters the pool below the water line, then you do need a backflow valve of some kind.

As a kid we used to swim under these when they were filling the public pool to maintain the water level.

The PVC line is not higher than the deck but it is higher than the pool water line. It’s about 2-3 inches above the water line. It’s is little hard to tell, but in the picture above it shows the pvc line and the pool grate where the extra water exits the pool. It does fill the pool like a faucet. We manually turn it on and off. The PVC pipe was connected to the hose bibb with a vacuum breaker in between.
