cold air return location

ok i asked this in a different question but it kind of got changed into the furnace issues. so i have nothing wrong with the furnace. it is new. the installer came back out and double checked to make sure everything was good on that.

what i would like to find out is the general consensus of where cold air returns should be placed on the wall for michigan grand rapids muskegon area?

the builder is from indianna and built the house with the cold air returns high on the walls about 8' high for 9' ceilings. it seems to me that as the heat fills the room as it gets down to the returns it is then starting to draw the heat out of the room. it does get warm in the room but the furnace seems to run a bit longer than it did before in the old house.

so we do not have central air so as i understand in warmer areas they have started placing the cold vents high so to better fill the room with cool air. also our cold return ducts are in the attic so that may be also helping in the room not heating quite as fast and the furnace running a bit longer. but it seems to me if the vents were lower close to the floor the heat would be forced to fill the room down to those vents or at least the t-stat. thanks

Supplies in the floor and returns high on the walls. Return should be insulated being in the attic as well as supply. If you have natural gas can clock the gas meter to see how many btu's it's using.

the ducts are insulated to r8 and this spring i will wrap them in more and try to get up to r30 ish. but i'm asking if it is normal for returns to be so high in northern climates thanks

Worked for me with two houses in St.Louis contractor 1980 and 1976 built. Gets to below zero.
