One electrical circuit in my home powers on an off without tripping the breaker. This will happen multiple times in a day and other days not at all.

Details:

70 amp service
60+ year old drop
15 amp circuit
Replaced breaker
Tightened all wires in panel
Nothing burnt or discolored
Max 7 amp draw on circuit
Solid wire
All outlets test positive ground
Occasional light flicker on affected circuit.

What is causing this one circuit to power on and off?

When the power goes off to that circuit without blowing the breaker, what voltage do you get from ground to each of the two non-ground blades in one of the affected sockets? The shorter slot is hot and the longer slot is neutral.

A lose connection could be anywhere. Start at the breaker and check every outlet for that circuit. Some homes the outlet could be pigged tailed ot the power goes through the outlet with the screw terminals or the backstabs are used.

A loose wire nut can also cause your problem. At the first outlet, plug in a GFCI tester and you should have two amber lights with the red one off and leave it there. When you have the problem, eyeball the tester. If the test lights remain steady, move the tester to the next outlet. If the connections at the outlet is wired through the outlet, place the tester in the other plug to check that the outlet is good. If everything looks good, could be a chewed wire in the walls somewhere.

The image is a pigtail connection and backstab. If wire goes in and out if the outlet, a backstab connection could be bad and not be seen. a94d82f544948cbe2cb0c953f2fcacd7.jpg
