Cast iron?

This is a 2005 construction slab 2 story single family home in Southern California.

The house is all ABS, with the exception of this cast iron 2 inch pipe that goes into the slab and transitions into ABS at the top of the wall for the master bath sinks on the 2nd floor.

The top no hub pulled off the ABS and leaked into the wall.

I believe they ran the ABS a little short and had trouble getting the no hub to seat correctly, I'm planning on cutting it out and bringing it down about 6 inches past the metal bracket then reinstalling the cast iron pipe with two new couplings.

I was also considering if it would be better to just run

ABS all the way down to the cast iron stub in the slab.

Thanks for any and all advice and input!

If the YouTube link I attached doesn’t work on the post you can view it here. Sound is muted by default.

Any idea on why the builder would randomly use cast iron here? It is an exterior wall but I have ABS going into the slab on other exterior walls.

It looks like those are the standard duty fernco fittings. You can grab some heavy duty ones that are a smidge wider and have a second set of bands (4 total) to give you a better connection.

As Reach4 mentioned, cast iron is quieter, it is also fire proof. You typically see it in high rise buildings where required for fire code. Personally I'd take a house with cast iron of pvc/abs any day, but its rare to see it in new residential due to the additional cost and labor. I also like knowing that at the end of its service life, cast iron can get melted down into new products. Plastics on the other hand are likely to end up in a landfill or other undesirable places.

Thanks for the input, got two 4 band no hubs and a new cast iron pipe.

I was mistaken and the stub out from the slab is ABS.

2x10 no hub pipe weighs about 35 pounds and I cut a foot and a half off. Doesn’t seem like there is an easy way to put a riser clamp to help support the weight as tight as it is framed.

It looked like solid ABS not foam core. Hopefully it’s good.

Here is the final result.

Looks good to me. Agreed, I'm not sure a riser clamp world work here. But with it sitting on top of another cast pipe that is embedded in the slab I'd consider that supported enough for 1 floor of cast iron pipe.

I was mistaken in my original post, the cast iron pipe is sitting on 2 inch abs not a cast iron stub out from the slab.

It’s been like that for 20 years so hopefully it’s fine.
