Must have been frozen. Better find a better drain method next year and leave the plug out of the pump housing bottom. Or pull the pump and take it to a nice warm spot.

I don't think your guy this anything wrong. The same thing happened to me now twice in a row. In the winter of 2015 I was just surprised and my neighbor said he never saw a pump crack like that. This year I carefully watched the weather before I left for longer & the replacement broke exactly the same way. On the first day there was a light frost. Two of the bolt holding parts just cracked. In my opionion this pump is made for hot climate and absolutely unfit for any cold weather.
