Can I replace water filter tubing?

My house came with a water filter system in the garage. It connects to the refrigerator in the kitchen above via a now 25 year old flimsy black plastic tube that I expect to crack any second, because similar tubes in other parts of the house already have.

1. Is there a more reliable tube type I can use instead?

2. Since the old tube is buried in the walls - is it reasonable to try to attach the new tubing to the old tubing and drag it into place? Or should I expect to have to open everything up?

Thanks for any advice!
