Hi,

I'm installing a submersible pump in a cistern to service my sprinkler system. A goulds 1SC51E1HA to be specific. Doing it myself (more questions on that forthcoming). Right now I'm in the "get familiar with you pump" phase. There is a "thingy" on the discharge side of the pump and I just can't figure out what it's for. Not mentioned in the installation instructions, the part list that I found on their site, or the pump specs. Anyone out there have insight? Thanks! Hopefully pics are clear enough.

I got it. Called the company today and got lucky. The tech took my call and researched (I figured they'd not talk to a "retail" customer). Anyway, apparently it is a grounding lug.

So now I need to figure out how to attach a wire that will be submerged and figure out "where" to ground it to.

It is just a ground wire so it doesn't have to be a water tight connection. Just crimp on an eye connector and attach the other end to the ground bar in your breaker panel.
