I solved my recent post regarding kitchen sink depth vs drain height, but barely. In my case, I had a dishwasher fitting above the p-trap, which used up about 4" in height. What if.... you have a 90 elbow coming off the drain basket and a short pipe leading into the dishwasher T and then into the P-trap? the dishwasher hose would come down from the top, and the T would slant towards the P-trap. It would save you a couple of precious inches. Would it drain into the trap or back up into the sink?

How about a photo?

The DW MUST be inserted before the P-trap, otherwise, it's likely that sewer gasses, and maybe sewage if things backed up, could get into the DW.

In many places, there should also be an air gap (usually in the countertop) to prevent sewage, but wouldn't stop sewer gasses.

As long as the arm of the DW inlet to the drain is angled to keep the flow intact, it will probably work. As said, a picture might help.

Now I see why you wanted a picture. I don't think this will save much vertical distance if any. Reason being that it would take two additional 90 turns. First would be a 90 waste pipe coming off the sinks drain basket that would feed into the DW tailpiece fitting which is now running horizontal. But the P-trap still has to run vertical, which would mean another 90 coming off the DW fitting.

Dishwashers can drain directly into the sink. That is standard for "portable" dishwashers. No extra
plumbing under-sink required. Nothing says a non-portable DW cannot be so modified.
