Yes, this happens. Some of these are plastic, and they can break.
This is a compression stop, that after turning off the water can be replaced. I use a sleeve puller and remove the back nut and go back with everything new.

Well, I've never broken one of those. Me and the boys are going to have to get together and take your pipe wrench away from you.
