In trying to decide whether to use a ⅜" comp or ½" comp shut off valve I suddenly wondered does the mfgr use the same size hose inside the SS braided lines for the two sizes of connector?

The hose is the same, the ends are different.
Unless you have the old 9.5 GPF Kohler low-bow toilets which needed a 1/2" nominal line, the 3/8" is all you will ever need.
