I would need the model number of the boiler, the controls and thermostat if used, to be able to help you.

the model number is 1135-605. the thermostat was replaced last week. it's a honeywell, non-programmable round one.

Do you have an outdoor reset control? That can lower or raise the 'normal' boiler setpoint dynamically based on conditions.

An outdoor reset would require an outside air temperature sensor to work. If you have the installation instructions, it would also show where it would be connected...if those connections are empty, it doesn't exist.

An outdoor reset would adjust the boiler's maximum temperature based on several conditions, one of them being how cold it is outside, so it needs a sensor to tell it that. Have a mild day, the boiler won't get a shot...have a really frigid one, or the boiler has to stay on forever, and the logic usually will raise the temperature so you can get more heat into the house. It's a tradeoff...longer run cycles are more efficient, but if the temp is set too low, even on constantly may not generate enough heat to keep the place warm, so it only raises the boiler temp when needed to overcome the frigid conditions, and lowers it otherwise (within limits you can set).
