Today we pulled out our old clog-prone toilet and discovered that the pvc drain line was obscured about 1/3 with this grayish cement-like stuff. It chipped away fairly easily with a screwdriver, but we're wondering what this stuff might be.

The stuff, thankfully, didn't seem to have any odor.

Our house was built in 2001 and the bathroom has no tile in it whatsoever, so it's unlikely that it's actually cement in there (our house was never in foreclosure so former occupants had no reason to vandalize the plumbing).

Any ideas?

Gray would normally mean grout or mortar mix.
If it was yellow or something like that, maybe salt crystals from urine. I've seen plenty like that on "If it's yellow, let it mellow" toilets.
