This has been going on since the end of July. We had black stuff coming from the bathtub faucet and it was intermittent. We have had the drain snaked professionally and then had to call him back about a month later bc it was happening again. He said it was prob some rubber ring deteriorating and replaced it. It’s been several weeks and I turn on the faucet tonight and here it is again. Any ideas? I keep paying out money thinking it’s fixed and it’s not obviously. I have no idea what it could be.

Only the tub? See if you have braided flex connector lines. If so, replace them, possibly with corrugated copper or stainless.

Check your lavatory and kitchen aerator screens. If those have that black stuff, then replace the flex lines on the water heater.

Thanks! We have a shower in the other bathroom, we can’t ever see it coming from the shower head but we have a black ring at the bottom of the shower so we assume it’s happening with that too but not as much, since we can’t seem to catch any in a cup. He replaced the rubber ring in there too. We haven’t had any come from our kitchen or sinks.

The most likely aspect has already been mentioned...check your water heater for flex lines feeding it. If you have those, replace them, preferably with corrugated copper or stainless steel ones verses hoses. Those corrugated ones should be considered single use...they get stiffer once you bend them, so when it comes time to replace, bending it may cause it to split. But, since once installed, you don't need to move them around, they will work well for a very long time.

Thanks! We do have them for the water heater. They’re A few years old. Would it be happening to the sinks too, since they feed off the water heater? We haven’t had any sink issues at all.

Do you know how to check the lavatory (bathroom sink) aerator screen? How about kitchen sink?

For most bathroom spouts, you turn the place the water comes out of counter-clockwise as viewed from below. That would seem clockwise as seen from above.

You hope to just inspect and clean the aerators, so you will try to unscrew the aerator by hand. If you use pliers, you could pad the jaws with a thick rag.

Some kitchen faucets have the aerator buried inside. Others have them right out front.
