Hi All,

Remodel question around best method for plumbing this sink...

Current drain directly below sink cabinet. There will be a disposal below sink and I'm trying to keep as much available space under the sink for a small garbage can. Sink is a single drain so disposal will be centered. The area behind the cabinet will be dead space under a countertop. The vent comes down the wall in the dead space, you can see the cutout in the floor where it was originally before being tucked behind the new drywall. I have access to everything below as this is over a garage. Not sure if i should use existing drain or run a new line out the back to the vent in the wall? Or any number of options you guys think may work best.

Happy to provide any more info or pictures.

Thanks in advance!

Just a standard sanitary tee upright. One pipe going up to the vent, one pipe going down to the drain. Offset as needed.

In addition to what John recommends for the behind the scenes piping.

To maximize the space in your cabinet. You need to stub your drain into the cabinet just slightly off center by about 3 inches and just high enough that the trap will connect to the disposal elbow without an extension tube. Slightly off center allows you to have better access to the trap for connection and the dishwasher port is aimed at an angle for connection to your dishwasher. You may choose to aim at the side where your airgap will drain from if applicable. Also keep your water stub outs away from the center of your sink so that your pull down faucet hose doesn't get tangled up. Your clean out fitting should be above the drain fitting so that if you need to snake the drain, you can run water down the sink drain while cabling and not have water pouring out the clean out.

Since you have access from below, it certainly seems like it would be best to put the san-tee in the wall under the vent, and move the drain so it stubs up into the wall below the san-tee, rather than under your cabinet.

Presumably the vent has to stay in the wall above countertop height. Below countertop height, it can only offset at a 45 from plumb, it can't go horizontal. So that limits where your san-tee can be.

You could stick the san-tee just outside the drywall, jogging into the wall with two 45s, and run your drain down to a LT90 just above the floor, pointed at a quarter bend that connects to your existing drain stub under the cabinet. [There's no trap below the floor, right?] But I imagine those two bends could be problematic in the future, so better to move the drain in the garage ceiling.

Cheers, Wayne
