Hey y'all,

I'm getting ready to finish up my rough-in and decided, based on the condition of the old piping (galvanized), I'm going to replace the run from the meter to the crawl. Was hoping to outsource the work, but $5-8k estimates makes my project unfeasible, so I'm going to take it on myself. I'm comfortable with plumbing, just haven't done this part before.

I reached out the the local authority and asked if they had a preferred material; as expected, they said "Which ever piping material is code approved for water service" - nothing more, nothing less. I should expect that, and okay.

That said, from my interpretation of code, just about everything is technically approved, so I need to choose. Two questions:
1) What material would you choose for a 40 foot run? Am I just overthinking it...
2) Does the tracer wire need to be tied into the main panel, or any ground will do?

Thanks, as always,
Neil

1. I would tend toward polyethene. There is more than one type and size. For DIY, I would go with SIDR pipe and barbs. Pros tend to go with compression fittings on CTS sized pipe I think.

2. The main panel will need a ground rod for grounding. You would not connect the tracer wire to the main panel.
