Backerboard for shower/tub

Well the info on this discussion certainly seems out of date. My preferred approach is sealing a waterproofing material to the backer boards and the tub deck's tile lip. This prevents any water from ever getting to the backer board. On the project below the tub is an undermount design so the brown or black material (Ardex 8+9) is carried all around the tub and shower area.


You can use nothing more than DensShield or WonderBoard Lite but with these approaches some kind of heavy poly should be installed behind the backer boards and sealed to the tub's tile ledge.

Here we see some of the Australian requirements for waterproofing a tub and shower's backer board. The Australian code are much better than the ones in Canada and the US. Learn more about them here.
