It would be cheaper and wiser to just let the system rest in peace. The Autotrol valves were great in the 80's, it may be time to just let them go. :) Real world grains would be set at about 16,000 grains or less per tank considering the age of the resin assuming 8-10 pound of salt per ft3.

Fyi this thing is about 10 years old.
It is set to 24,000 grains. Just didn't know if it was accurate.
What would be better to test the hard water besides the strips?

I know a few companies still use that design, primarily for specialty applications but it is not an optimal design by todays standards and with the newer designs that are available...

Without knowing how they set up the system it is hard to know how much resin is actually in the tanks. Did they stuff them full with no freeboard? did they use a fine mesh resin? etc. Take a look for the date mold stamp, it is usually in several locations on the valve.
