Its a power vent water heater, so what is the problem.....
and what does "back burn" mean anyway??

They always burn for 5 to 20 minutes
when you first start them up to heat the cold water up to temp.....
what do you expect them to do?

so do you have hot water???

Not a power vent. Back burn is when the entrance to the burner is actually burning not the burner under tank. See youtube vids on back burn on whirlpool water heaters.

Well, if the entrance to the burner assembly is on fire when the unit is burning
or it is flaming up outside of the heater then it should be shut down .... asap

I deduce that you got a serious gas issue on that water heater or the flue is
blocked up and its probably best to shut it down and call a plumber
or just shit-can that hunk of junk before you burn the house down...
