Hi everyone,

I'm planning to get a water softener within the next couple weeks. My municipal water quality report and online sizing calculators lead me to believe I would be best served with a 48,000 - 64,000 size system. I would prefer to oversize reasonably and use a lower salt quantity rinse as I understand that is more efficient for salt usage.

In researching different Fleck valve options I've become interested in the Fleck 5800 XTR2, which seems to have been announced in 2013. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this valve and opinions positive or negative.

I see dittohead reviewed the 5800SXT and liked it in 2012. Is the 5800 series still a great valve and one people like?

Other than a couple Canadian web stores I'm unable to find complete systems with a Fleck 5800XTR2. It appears that Pentair limits the Fleck 5800XTR2 to brick and mortar dealers. Where I could find the 5800XTR2 valve pricing info online, it was only about $50 - $80 more than a 7000 valve. Is it worth hassling with a local dealer or should I just get a 7000?

3,400 sq ft house, 3.5 baths, 5 people and 1" PEX incoming supply line. I'd like to keep the water flow rate up for the wife's happiness, but would personally like the touchscreen XTR2.

Thoughts and feedback please! :)

How much was that setup, and where did you get the parts? This is almost the same as config I want to do

Let me clarify a couple of things. As a DIYer, I engaged a licensed plumber local to my area to perform and assist in the setup -- so i was more of a project manager. I had very specific requirements for fixing/routing my softener loop and ultimately water treatment requirements . Many local companies in my area were more than willing to participate in this role, as the certified installer and do some basic plumbing work. As for cost, we don't discuss cost on these forums for many reasons. I was able to separate the delivery model in my approach to this solution. I researched the solution (Clack or Fleck, looked at the low cost companies out there... , up-flow vs. down-flow, dug deeper and ultimately threw them out, i.e. non Clack/Flick) decided on plumbing work needed with my loop (previous home owner screwed it up, hacked it from 1 inch piping to 3/4), then decoupled the solution by sourcing the solution (parts/components) and engaged a known licensed plumber associate to install within my market. Everyone made some money, I saved money due to becoming educated on the technology. I chose the Fleck (Pentair) approach for a few reasons:

1. I have used Fleck in the past, this new solution replaced a Fleck 9100 solution. I was very happy with that solution for the many years it provided water treatment.
2. I wanted a U.S. based solution. Enough said.
3. All water treatment folks (including the ones that sell the foreign designed/made) all have nothing but positive things to say about Clack/Fleck. That says something right there.... $$ was not a top priority for me.
4. I went Fleck because of the technology and telemetry data it provides. Not quite where I would like to see it -- bet we will see more "home automation-like" capabilities very soon.
5. I was comfortable and had time to talk with many folks and research my solution. I was okay with being involved and project managing the solution and providing specific requirements for my solution. Some firms did not like that, which told me a lot about their intention (in and out).

Feel free to PM me if you would like to know more.

Thank you intel1212 for your answer. I was looking to get a local plumber and system but most of them have bad reviews and I know how most of them do work. In and out and don't care about anything since this is not their stuff. Looking further and read into the whole Water Softener stuff I would go with Fleck as well.

Suggest researching local water treatment equipment dealers. They normally are specialists who are experienced and knowledgeable in water conditions and treatment options effective in your area.

While there are dealers for proprietary equipment such as Culligan and Kinetico, the more general dealers typically offer Fleck, Clack and Autotrol brands.
