Amazon has been in the news recently due to the recall of several brands of Chinese-made uncertified illegal faucets.
The recall, however, is just a very small drop in the bucket.
Over 800 brands of illegal faucets are sold on Amazon constituting about 13,000 illegal faucets. Amazon itself sell 17 brands of uncertified faucets for its own account as well as hosting hundred of other sellers.
Many of the same brands are also sold on Wayfair, Overstock and wallmart. Box lumber store like Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, and Sutherlands used to be a little cautious about legality, but black market faucets have appeared in these stores over the past five years. Companies like Ferguson, Briggs, Hajoca, and Winnelson are also no longer 100% reliable, although they do some screening.
I urge every plumber to check certifications BEFORE installing a faucet. If it is not a known brand, demand a listing certificate showing that it has been tested and certified to joint US/Canadian standards.
If all else fails, contact us at starcraftreviews@yahoo.com and we will check it out for you within one workday. The service is free.
We also offer a report that identifies the 800 or so illegal faucets on Amazon. The report is located at Amazon's Illegal Faucets. We are working on the same report for Wayfair.
