That whole mess needs to be redone! You have 1) horizontal santee fitting instead of the required wye or equivalent;
2) short 90 fitting instead of the required long-turn 90 (sweep); 3) vent 90 instead of the required closet bend/90. In addition,
of course, to joining ABS and PVC in a non-approved manner.
The guy who did that work is a real menace to society.

I'm not sure what all that means but the PVC section was done by the idiot I knew. The rest of it is old stuff done by the incompetent remodelers my grandma hired decades ago. (These fools even glued carpet without padding straight on top of tile.)

I did some research regarding Sanitary Tee and Wye and from the following graphic, it looks like the ABS piece that's connected to the PVC is a Wye. Maybe you're looking at something else? I read that a Sanitary Tee is only for horizontal to vertical changes because just horizontal can lead to clogs. That pipe that goes off to the right is connected to the shower so there shouldn't be anything coming through it but water. I plan on removing the PVC portion and replacing it with the long sweep.

I think he is looking at C as the sanitary tee.View attachment 41677

Ah ok. Yes, that's very old stuff. Since it's coming from the sink and it's held up for many decades I'd wager to say it's probably ok to remain. Parts H, J, K, L all need to go though. I was going to replace that sharp bend with a 90 degree long sweep. Although I think someone mentioned a 4 x 3 closet bend somewhere above.

What's scary to me are the two joists that have essentially been severed. What's holding things up? It isn't the joists!

Yeah those are some big notches! It's held up for more than half a century though so it's definitely stood the test of time.

I was going to watch "The African Queen" with Humphrey Bogart and Catherine Hepburn tonight. I've changed my mind. Think I'll just re-read this thread.
