Hello All,

Wondering if I can do what I'm proposing in the schematic (see the items noted as Added). Basically want to tap into a shower drain in the crawl space to add a drain for Water softener. The drain will be outside the wall and I will put an air gap on the connection to the softener drain line.

I don't really have anywhere to drain this outside.

Would doing this cause a siphoned issue on the shower drain? Shower drain is 2" I believe, and goes into the 3" main below.

Should the trap for the softener be in the crawlspace or can iit be outside (it would be about 12-24 inches higher if outside)?

Should the tap be a sanitary Tee or a wye?

Location San Jose CA

Thanks,
Jason

I think you want to drain into the city sewer. Under UPC or IPC, the trap is not allowed to be below the floor. AFAIK, outside is OK. The venting needs to be before the flow turns down from the trap arm.

You may be able to route the drain through an air gap to a branch tailpiece for the lavatory. The backwash for a 10 inch diameter softener is typically 2.4 gpm.

I am not sure what you mean by "the tap".

Thanks for the response. Yes I am planning to add this to the city sewer which is why I am trying to go into the existing shower drain. It is the easiest point to access and easiest to access in the crawl space. I want to avoid going into the bathroom if possible.

I guess I am asking can I add tee or wye (this is what I refer to as tap, or tapping into that arm) on the trap arm of the shower drain (picture with red circle). That is the shower drain p-trap. The vent for that arm is just off to the left and that is where it goes down to the main sewer.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
