Need to buy a 50 gal tank for a buffer/mixer for my geothermal hot water. Was going to use a 50 gallon hot water heater tank from one of the box stores - is any brand better than others?

Some have 6 year warranty, some have 12 - but look the same?

Rheem, AO Smith. Also stainless tanks from Westinghouse ('lifetime warranty').

We do have a water softener.

Any opinion would be great thanks!

Sometimes the difference between a 6 or 12 year warranty on a water heater is the price, an extra anode rod and nothing more.
Your water quality has a lot to do with longevity. How long did your previous water heater last? You may want to have your water tested for chlorides if you're considering a stainless tank.
