I currently have a three handle shower faucet made by Central Brass. My stems are part number Danco 10L-11H/C and my diverter Danco 10L-13D. The problem I have is when ever I replace the hot stem, I always have a leak after at most a few weeks. By this time, it seems the washer on the stem is completely gone. When I replace the seat, I use liquid water sealent. After a few weeks, the washer in the stem that is pressed against the stem is gone, which is when the leak is at its worst.

I've also had to replace the diverter stem. After a few weeks, the shower loses pressure even though there is no pressure loss to the tub. My best guess is maybe some of the washer made it through the pipe and is blocking the flow in the diverter? I also noticed the shower stem doesn't have a seat like the hot water stem...don't know if thats a negative thing.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong when I'm replacing these parts?

Can I update the stems to a moen system just by using their parts from a product below without replacing the the same plumbing in the wall since I already have a three stem system?

With the O-ring on the stem, you shouldn't need any pipe sealant. You might want to apply some silicone plumber's grease to the O-ring before installing it. Other than that...

Now, did you indicate that you'd also changed the valve seat? If the seat is worn out, all rough, when you tighten a new washer down onto it, you'll damage it. How long it lasts depends on how bad the seat is, how often you use it, and how high your water pressure is.

Many valves have replaceable seats, if yours doesn't you MIGHT try resurfacing it, but generally, it's time for a new valve.

I've got a Price pfister three handle/knob setup, very basic. I have replaced the seat on the hot side more times than I can remember, at least once every 8 or 9 months for the past several years. Sometimes the seat is eroded at the base, sometimes where the washer makes contact, makes no since to me. I generally use pipe dope on the threads and when I fix it, it's good to go for another 9 months of so. Why do I continue to have premature seat failure/erosion with this one, hot side valve? This last time I replaced the valve and seat both, with genuine Pf. It lasted a little longer, but still failed within a year's time, erosion at the base of Pf S70-500 Seat. I have attached a few examples from when I've had to replace the seat, I have many more, varying in where and how they eroded. I hate to have to replace the whole thing, when I may simply be missing something simple that is causing this. Any help is appreciated.

Look in your area for the valve seat in Monel. It is a copper/nickel alloy that is much harder than the brass replacements or Price Pfisters chrome plated brass. Also be sure to use a teflon based thread sealant paste. The 18 thread is known to have water seep around the seat.
