Early 1900’s building with a thick wall 3/8 brass stub out. The OD is slightly over 5/8, so 1/2 copper will not fit.

Besides opening the wall and removing the brass, how can I add a shutoff to this brass?

Thank you for your time.

How slightly? Could you swage out a 1/2 inch connector, and solder it on?

Or use a piece of nominal 5/8 copper pipe, and solder that on. Available with 0.652 or 0.666 inch ID. Don't confuse 5/8 with nominal 1/2 inch copper being 5/8 OD.

Negative. Will not fit. Approximately one hash mark on a typical measuring tape, so a 1/16.

0.0625 +0.625 = 0.6875

You should get a digital caliper, or a vernier caliper if you are willing to learn how to use it. Advantage to vernier: no battery.

I might wrap many wraps of cleaned copper wire around cleaned brass to fill space, and solder on a 3/4 inch copper fitting.

3/8" IPS (Iron Pipe Size) is 0.675" OD. If the ID is about 0.493", then it's Schedule 40 brass. For which the conventional joining method would be to thread the end and use a 3/8" female IPS fitting.

Cheers, Wayne

I missed the second paragraph of your response when responding. Thank you for mentioning the other sizes of copper as well as getting a measurement and wrapping copper wire around. Gears are turning now. Thank you very much!!

Hey Wayne, I’m going to measure this and see what I have. This is a good idea. Thank you!!
