Hi,
I am the original home owner and house is 15 years old. I removed my original 1222 Moen shower cartridge as it was leaking at the handle. I noticed the builder had modified the end of the cartridge so it would seat in the back of the valve circular seat area. What I mean by that is, the outer plastic case was trimmed down to facilitate getting all the way in the valve.

The valve started leaking due to excessive calcium build up in the valve body.

I asked Moen for a new valve and they are sending one.

Now, my questions:
1. Why did the original installer modify the valve outer cartridge in the first place? This should not be necessary right?
2. Any recommendations to remove calcium besides a vinegar solution? (For example 'Lime Away, or CLR'?

Thanks.

The new cartridges don't come with an O-Ring at the back. Is this what you see?
