Drain Water Heat Recovery system design

Adding onto this thread (for better or worse). We have this model: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/power-pipe-r4-72-drain-water-heat-recovery-unit/1000698147 New house. Every time we run the dishwasher, or drain a bath tub, we get a lot of clangs and bangs, presumably (to me) from the DWHR...

    Moentrol Valve - weird issues

helper Dave: thanks for the idea on the SharkBite plastic. i cut a hole in the backside of the wall and removed it. no more drips Terry: thanks for the product recommendation. I ended up not using the sleeve, but did use the brass extension. I was nervous, b/c the long screw bolt they provided...

    Moentrol Valve - weird issues

yes, that's the valve i have. question: do you have availability in the next week to do a service call? project is in lower queen anne. i don't think i reduced the pipe size necessarily, but perhaps the sharkbite reduces flow just enough to make the difference. i tried today without the...

    Moentrol Valve - weird issues

thanks for the info Terry. how does the extension piece solve the issue of not being able to fully shut off the water? seems like by sticking out more, it would just cause the screw to pull more on the valve??? yes, I replumbed the spout portion of the line with a Sharkbite elbow. methinks...

    Moentrol Valve - weird issues

I recently removed tile and installed new backerboard and tiles in a shower/tub unit. the plumbing pipes were not connected to anything and they moved in and out relative to the tile wall. the old valve is an old school Moentrol. I didn't add blocking to the valve since I didn't know the correct...

    Water heater TPRV

turns out the line was just a pressure relief line that somewhere converts into PVC before it exits the exterior wall. i blew through the flex tubing and my FIL felt the air outside. so, it's abandoned now (probably should cap it i guess)

    Water heater TPRV

the first pic is the new unit with the line coming out of the wall. the second pic is the old unit; the middle one is the TPRV

    Water heater TPRV

i'm installing a new rheem hybrid water heater. in taking out the old one, there's 3 lines at the top of the unit: cold supply, hot outlet, and a line going to the TPRV. in the new rheem unit, the TPRV is on the side of the unit, about mid height. all the info i can find on this install says...

    Water Temperature Changing

I've noticed in the past 3-4 days that I've had to turn the handle on the bathtub a little more to get the same water temperature as before. My wife noticed similarly on the kitchen sink. Is my water heater dying (60 gal electric tank)? It was generally normal temperatures and nothing more...

    Ikea Plumbing.....?

bumping this thread again (thanks all for the info!): i'm curious if someone could recommend a replacement drain assembly for this ikea vanity sink setup. i'd like to get something in oil rubbed bronze. based on what i see online, most have long extension tubes to connect to the p-trap, so i'm...

Relocating thermostat to allow heating with wood stove?

damn, you know your stuff!!! maybe on the next basement remodel i do (which is never, i hope), i will use polyiso. it's tough to know what you don't know until you know it :)

Relocating thermostat to allow heating with wood stove?

my understanding of polyiso is that it loses performance over time. plus, when actually cold out, it performs poorly. the price i got on the xps was $0.32/SF per inch thickness, so it seemed reasonable to me. i hear you on the fireblocking. i struggled with finding a way to install it without...

Relocating thermostat to allow heating with wood stove?

dang, that is a seriously thorough and helpful reply. i will double check numbers sometime this week. i want to say the overall floor area is about 900 SF. pony walls, on average, are 4ft tall. windows are likely U=0.31. there's about 54SF of them. 2 new doors - 1 exterior, 1 fire rated garage...

Relocating thermostat to allow heating with wood stove?

dana, thanks for the feedback. alas, i haven't seen all your posts regarding insulating and preventing mold farms. here's what i did: - gutted down to the studs. - performed seismic retrofit (anchor bolts, plywood on inside face of walls, etc) - installed R11 behind plywood in the exterior...

Relocating thermostat to allow heating with wood stove?

so, here's the background: 2 story house (basically a ranch with a basement and garage on the bottom level). basement has rec room, bedroom, bath and washer/dryer. upstairs is kitchen, living room with fireplace, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths. the thermostat is currently in the hallway that accesses the...

Please verify my proposed re-venting/draining for washer

thanks terry! is it okay for me to cut out the old drain at the basement slab and put on a cap? alternatively, instead of a cap, could i glue a flat plate to the top? i'm planning to insulate the wall in the same exact spot as the existing drain with 3" XPS, so the less material interfering the...

Please verify my proposed re-venting/draining for washer

see image for my proposed rework. i'm moving our washer/dryer location as part of a basement remodel. i'm proposing to adjust the plumbing as shown in the image. my question, aside from does it look right, is whether it's okay to demo the existing vent from the washer that connected to the main...
