Old Schaefer pump and Franklin Electric motor review

Yea I wouldn't run without one with a large pump-casing diameter difference, or with a top feeding well. Even if the motor doesn't directly overheat, the larger temperature fluctuations will increase wear.

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

I came across something similar when researching possible causes of the damage to my casing - smaller diameter casing can withstand more external pressure. Suppose its just a matter of the increased surface area. Good catch on the adapter. Wasn't going to mention it since I was hitting the...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

Minimum quantity of two and shipping brings the total to $75 haha. There's a lot of conflicting information and a whole range of opinions out there. I've had better experiences with old CPVC compared to PVC, but not to the degree that I wouldn't easily change my mind. The little information I...

Old Schaefer pump and Franklin Electric motor review

Too bad about the lack of repairs. I wonder what the most common mode of failure for these is. Considering the location, most failures probably won't be noticed until pumping has pretty much completely stopped. A lot of the failures I saw when researching had to do with the coils overheating...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

Yea I already made it, cemented male adapters at each end. There's a picture in the original post, below the pitless adapter. I didn't even think about cutting threads onto the pipe. Suppose it wouldn't really work with CTS sized PVC anyway. Could be funny and put 1/2" NPT threads on 3/4" CTS...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

CPVC holds up better over time compared to PVC. I'm pretty sure even 1" CTS CPVC is going to have a higher tensile strength that 1.25" PE, so my concern is more about brittle failure down the line. Schedule 80 PVC would probably be better than CTS CPVC even in regard to long term brittle failure...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

Yea the pitless adapter is a massive pain to properly align the first time, but at least it's a one time job. That's an interesting point about having a fluid velocity sufficient to lift out sediment. I don't think there is anything large enough to be a concern in my well, but I'll inspect the...

Old Schaefer pump and Franklin Electric motor review

Alright, last long post from me for now. Franklin Electric told me that this pump and motor are not repairable, which is kind of odd since they sell repair parts and it's all a fairly basic design. There are some minor differences between this pump and motor from 2007 and their current...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

Yup, check valve for just above the pump. I'll keep using the S250 on this pump if it keeps working, but I wouldn't mind replacing it when I get the new pump. Flomatic was telling me that the primary advantage of the VFD models was for low flow velocity situations. Seems like mine fit that bill...

Pitless adapters, cables, drop pipe, and check valves

Nothing crazy here, just an interesting pitless adapter, under-specced drop pipe, and disappointing check valve. Next and last will be the pump and motor. Pitless Adapter My pitless adapter is a relatively uncommon style from what I can tell. It doesn't rest on anything at the elbow. Instead...

Condition of my well, some thoughts about caps, and other rambling.

Yea, the current cap won't ever be waterproof. It can be sprayed down with a hose and not leak, so I'm happy with it. But when thinking about designing a new cap, it's really a small jump from that standard to fully waterproof. What's the concern with using valves for venting? Cost or...

Condition of my well, some thoughts about caps, and other rambling.

Alright, hold on to something, this is going to be a long one. Since I finally got my pump freed, I now have the opportunity to overthink things and fix them until they break. This will be the first of three posts, since apparently everything at once is a bit over the character limit... The...

I found that piece I pulled from there. On closer inspection, it actually looks a bit more like a piece of the PE drop pipe.

Sounds good about the refill. Was wondering of the graphite in the fill solution might actually be aiding with lubrication. Will do regarding the relief valve. I'll also slightly lower the cut out pressure for my switch. It's at the upper end of what my pump can generate. I think I'll find the...

Good point, thanks for catching that. I'd already been thinking about adding a mid-way check valve since the manual for that pump recommends them every 100', but if the one in the pump is leaking then it should definitely be replaced with one near the pump.

Gonna be a fun day of fishing

Yea I was starting to doubt too lol. I do have a relief valve near the pressure tank, but the pump can't generate enough pressure to open it, so not much help in its current state. The pump itself is a 2007 Schaefer Tri-Seal 7LD05S4-2W230, driven by a 1/2 HP Franklin Electric 2445059004. Only...

Gonna be a fun day of fishing

It's finally out! Thanks everyone for bearing with me though this and for all the advice! From what I can tell, it probably was deformed casing that was causing it to stick. All of the tape you see in the picture was cut after it was stuck, and the ground wire all came out on top on the pump...

Gonna be a fun day of fishing

Alright, some delay, but finally ready to give this a shot. Rope is 1/2" PES rated for 9,200 lbs, but my puller is only rated for 4,000 lbs. If it doesn't move like this, and if nothing breaks, I wonder if it might be worth running the pump with a very low flow to try and heat up the portion of...

Gonna be a fun day of fishing

Yea it doesn't look like melting at all, seems to pretty clearly be a crack. Was thinking maybe heat may have weakened already stressed casing, but at that temperature I would expect more deformation before full on cracking (although the PVC is at least 50 years old). I'll be setting the new...

The pump is actually free in its current position. It can rotate and move down no problem, but trying to pull it out results it in being stuck in about the area pictured. I noticed early on that when trying to pull it out, there was a sort of 'bumpy' feeling just before it got stuck. That would...
