I just called the township and they told me what I have is as per code. So yo don't recommend swapping it out with copper pipes, fittings rather just fix the BF preventer and use PVC connections - that would be quick and simple for sure.

Ok mystery solved - I found the old plug buried in the mud nearby. It's worn out so must have slipped away. I replaced it with the homedepot plug and all's working now.

When I run that sprinkler zone, this pipe spews all the water and there isn't enough pressure to pop the sprinkler head. Plus this one is like 30-35 yards from the house. It's a 1 inch pipe.
