I read somewhere that when transitioning from PVC to metal, the female fitting should be metal, and the male fitting should be PVC, to prevent cracking. Is this true?

Yes, always. Plastic threads into a metal female fitting.
You don't want a plastic female fitting that can't hold the fitting inside. They're fine for a non pressure situation like for a cleanout, but not for something that needs to be torqued down.
