My bathroom sink drain stubout tee has a “depth limiting lip/ring” (see picture) about half an inch into the tee. The lip doesn’t go all the way around inside the tee, but a good 3/4 of it has it. Question:

is this just an old manufacturing defect? or is it there on purpose so that when making a slip joint connection, the inner pipe that slips into the tee has a depth limiting stop and doesn’t go too far? The old connection had a plastic pipe slipped in there and was forced past that lip. When I try to slip in a new bronze pipe, it won’t go past that 1/2 inch lip. Thanks
