I had a plumber install a hot and cold ball shutoff under my bathtub. He said he liked ball shut offs because they never leak. As soon as we turned on the main valve, one of the new ball valves leaked.
He replaced it, and it has held for about 8 years.

This week I had to replace a tub fixture. When I turned off one of the ball valves, it squirted water out the side, from the stem on the handle, but held when I shut it all the way off.

if it fails when I turn it back on, is there something better I can use, that won’t leak?

There is a packing nut under the handle. Remove the handle, snug up the packing nut, reinstall handle. It should be fine.

Looks like there are two different types of valves.
One appears it might have a packing nut under the handle.
The other looks like it has a plastic bushing under the handle.
If it has a plastic bushing, do I just tighten the nut on the handle?
