My kids want to try making an in-ground fire pit in our back yard. The pit would be about 3 feet across and surrounded by patio pavers. The right place for it happens to be at the top next to a small hill downward where it would be easy to install a pipe underground out to the side of the hill to drain the pit and provide a vent for the flames. What type of pipe would you bury to act as a vent and drain for a fire pit? Plastic would melt from the heat, but most metal pipes corrode.

When the pit is dug go down about 12-18 inch below the fire pit floor, line the bottom and sides with weed fabric, place the PVC drain pipe near the bottom and then fill it with stone. Heat from the flames will never go down but a few inches or so into the stone so melting will not be an issue. Venting for the flames is not necessary. There is plenty of air coming from around it.

Google "How deep does a fire pit have to be?" and there are plenty of suggestions.
