I want to turn off the water in the house when we go on an extended vacation. I have a gas water heater, and I could put it on pilot only, or turn it off, but my wife wants to have hot water when we return. So if I leave the hot water heater on, and the water is turned off, what happens if the tank leaks? Will the water heater burner turn on? If so, how dangerous is that?

Even turning it on low she will have to wait for the water to get hot

I would shut off the water supply and gas just in case the heater leaks yo could have a potencal bomb

No friend/relative looking in on the house?

I'll bet she is reasonable in other areas.
