So I have old house 1883 that my wife and I bought almost a year ago now. I had have suspicions that something was wrong and so now I have called a structural engineer. I am so nervous, I want to get other people thoughts on it before he comes on Wednesday. I am worried that it will be bad to the extent that the repairs will exceed the cost of the house and mortgage then I wouldn't what I would do. There is a new crack in the basement, a cracked and partial twist floor joist, all of second floor casing/frames around the windows and doors have come away from the wall, the cracks go all different directions and various lengths, the house tilts one direction and people say that it is a fun house, floor are not level, visible gaps atop of doors, three jack post and two steel post with timbers holding the floor joist up. Any thoughts ? Thank you

It all starts with the foundation.
My home in Redmond was lacking a foundation or concrete pads under a stairwell. Until I poured some concrete there, added support and jacked up the home in that location, door frames were out of kilter. Sometimes the fix isn't that bad. It may be easily fixable.

What does the base of the house sit on now? Stacked stone, brick, wooden pilings, what? Is there a basement?

It is a stone foundation and the stone I believe is limestone. There is a basement.
