Hi everyone,

Wow, I never knew there was soooo much to learn about
toilets, it's been an education!
I've spent some time looking around at toilets in person,
reading online, and after discovering this site last night,
I spent all evening reading these forums.
This is a great resource, by far the best I've seen!
Kudos to all of you for giving your time.

We are installing a new toilet in our bathroom (I should say
my husband is, there is no "we" about doing the work.... lol :)
He is not a plumber, but is reasonably handy and has tinkered
with our old one before.

I had looked around to find one, and had settled on an American
Standard 13L Cadet 3.
(from what I've read here it looks like I made an ok choice?)
There are two Drake dealers about an hour from me, but I really
don't think we want to spend a lot extra if the Cadet would work?
I'm not sure if it matters, but there is also a toilet downstairs,
directly below the one we are replacing (house is a split entry).

We are interested in a water saving kit, and I found one called
TwoFlush http://www.twoflush.com
It looks to be exactly what we want.

Would anyone be familar with it? (I did a search here on the forums
but didn't find anything).
Any opinions as to whether it would work alright with the Cadet 3 13L?

Thanks in advance if anyone can offer any thoughts or advice!
(sorry to be so long, but I wanted to give any pertinant details).

This won't work with the 3" flush valve of the Cadet 3

It's meant for 3.5 or more tanks that use a 2" flush valve.
There is not a conversion kit to dual flush the Cadet.

Thank you so much for your quick reply!

hmmmm..... I was afraid that was going to be
too easy. :(

Are there any recommendations for 13L Toilets
that could have a dual flush kit added?

I did like the look and style of the TwoFlush kit.
Any of the others I've seen are top of the tank,
and I don't like that at all.

You would be well served to buy a toilet with the dual flush already in it!

We would love to do that, but the only ones we've
found that have the dual flush are 6L/4L combos.

Also, and this sounds so picky but.... I really don't
like the flush being on top of the tank, and that is
all I've seen (although again, they have all been low
flush which we don't want anyway).

We definitely want a 13L and we don't have any water
shortage issues so we can definitely support one, but there
are a "lot" of "liquid/tp" flushes per day, so it only seemed
right to use a dual flush if possible.

I really appreciate the responses, it's been very helpful!
I had no idea what was involved when I redid the bathroom
to white fixtures and tub enclosure, and the current toilet is
ivory.
I thought it would just be an easy swap... live and learn.

Where did you find a new toilet that uses 13L? What a waste...must be old stock, or you misquoted as it has been years, or you don't live in the USA.

You're right, it is a waste of water for liquid flushes.

I am in eastern Canada, and 13L toilets are still
available here (somewhat surprising, as recycling
has been done for a long time in this area, and
has ramped up over the past few years to include
quite a number of things).

In any case, we would like to have a dual flush,
as we do realize that 13 L's is a waste for the
majority of flushes used.

I've just read and heard too many bad things about
the low flow toilets to go that route, and honestly,
if we can get a dual, that 13 L's will only need to be
used a small percentage of the time.
Because of that.... I just don't want to set ourselves
up for a potential headache when the ability to have
both is there, you know?

The bad reports about low flow toilets are carry overs from the early days. While not every low flow toilet is a good one, there are a number to choose from. Toto, the worlds largest manufacture of toilets, has a number of models in a wide range of prices and all of them work well. I would urge you to go to the home page of this site and get into Terry's Report on Low Flow Toilets, especially the Toto line. Scroll down until you come to the Toto Shopping Cart. This will give you a full list. These are not the cheapest toilets you can buy, but they sure work like they should and are environment friendly.

I'm still hesitant.... (ok... "really" hesitant lol) but...
I'm willing to have an open mind. :)

I will check out the low flow a little more today.
When I checked the other night, the closest Drake
dealers are Gold Level dealers, which I think means
they have a good number of models available.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions and advice!
I'm on a mission to search again today.

The showrooms will charge retail.
Plumbers also buy from showrooms, and sometimes you can get better pricing that way.

I can't think of many old toilets that actually will flush better than some of the new ones.
I used to plunge the old bowls on a regular basis.
Old toilets used lots of water, a lot of it, was water slowly going down the drain, after the flush. The extra water wasn't flushing anything, it was more like leaving your kitchen tap on, and reading the newspaper.
New ones, USE the water for the flush. They are much more efficient with it.
Now that I have new toilets, when they do need plunging, I have to remember if the plunger is in one of the trucks, or in the garage. It's a long time between uses now.

Are you sure they make Cadet 3's with 13 liters per flush? If you mean the older Cadets for 3.5 then maybe you could. But on the contrary if you have one of those 3.5's I would go and buy the Drake. Less water, high performance.

You resurrected a 3-1/2 year old thread.

This is an old thread, and yes, they do make a 1.28 Cadet 3
That would make it a Watersense product, and the need to dual flush it doesn't make much sense.
Bowls are typically designed with a flush valve in mind. When you start changing those things, performance can suffer.
