It sounds like the gas/air mixture is off, improper combustion, improper exhaust or a combo. Have a pro check the system. e-plumber

The flue passages may be dirty with carbon build up. It sounds like the gas/air mixture is off, improper combustion, improper exhaust or a combo.
Have a pro check the system.
