PLEASE look at the photos in the attached link to see what can happen to a water heater with no pressure relief! You now have a tank with a MAX pressure rating of 150 pounds protected with a relief valve which will not lift until 180! The problem you experienced may be due to having a closed system (non-bypass PRV) and therefore you may need an expansion tank installed. Most W/H manufacturers recommend them; some codes require them. photos of water heater explosion
