The pump relocates the water from a sump pit to an approved discharge. Usually to the outside of a structure.
The pump is activated by a switch. This switch is usually turned on by a float that rises with the level of incoming water. When the water level lowers from the pumping, the float also falls and pulls down/off the switch. LonnythePlumber
