: You cannot just change the guts. That's like asking the mechanic to put Ford parts in your Chevy. Nothing fits. Most codes require that a remodel shower have a scald protect type valve. But as previously mentioned there are units that maintain the 3-valve look. The 3 handles are: (a) on/off/volume (b) temperature and (c) diverter.

Regardless of what you choose, you will have to gain access into the wall either from the tub side, or from thr other side of that wall if possible.
