Eljer lav faucet stem removal

aaarrrrgh - who knew faucets could be such a challenge! I have a problem trying to remove the stem from an Eljer faucet. I need to replace the stem (assuming I can find a replacement part) but cannot figure out how. The handle cover does not come off in the normal way (flip the cap off and remove a screw and then pull off the cover). Instead there is an insert in the handle which seems to be clipped into position. So, I tried unscrewing the stem both clockwise and anticlockwise out of the handle but it doesn't seem to want to come out and I'm wary of applying to much pressure in case I break something. The faucet's probably 20 years old. It's a 3 piece unit with two separate taps and a center spout, although under the sink it is a single unit. Thanks for any help! --Jamie
