:What Sylman means is that you need advice from a water quality expert. Iron and sulfites in the water can react with anode rods OF CERTAIN COMPOSITIONS to promote bacteria growth and odor. The treatment is usually a multi-step process involving treating the water, the eater heater, and possibly REPLACING the anode rod with one of a different composition. Simply removing it is just a back door attempt to minimize the problem, but the problem will not go away, and it will likely lead to early failure of the tank.
