Replacing the cast iron main drain with pvc

Hey guys, first time writer here. I'm currently replacing the main drain in my basement from a cast iron soil pipe to a pvc pipe. The main drain connects to the outside sewer via a cast iron Y bell. I really don't want to remove the lead and add the pvc to the existing bell. Can I just cut the pipe and use a rubber joint fitting to add the pvc to the cast iron pipe? Can I bury the rubber fitting, how long will it last, and will the o rings that secure the rubber to the pipes ever fail.
