The only reason I can think of as to why someone would tell you to drive deeper is a possible concern for ground water contamination. What are you using the water for? I have driven many point wells in Michigan's upper peninsula in areas where there is no power. I have found no good way to determine how much water a driven well will produce except by pumping it with a shallow well pump for a while. Most wells here produce around 5 gallons a minute once the pocket around the point is developed. More than enough for a "pitcher" pump. How much volume are you looking for? Also, the obvious key is the head of water you have in the pipe. Total depth has little to do with it. We've driven 80 foot wells (by hand) that have had a 65 foot head that have worked much better than shallower wells where the head is not quite as close to the surface.
