:The correct location of the flange is screwed on top of finished floor, or at worst flusch with finished floor. If you put it on your subfloor, you are talking 3/4" below finished. This is really too much to make up with wax, although it has been common to use 2 wax rings with generally acceptable results. \ Today, if you are not able to move the flange up, I would use a Fluidmaster or Oatey "waxless" ring as these have 2 to 3 inches vertical tolerance.
