If the only issue is drinking water, have you considered a drinking water filter? Personally, I think softened water tastes and feels nasty. I'd only use a softener if the water is so bad as to cause damage to the plumbingg and fixtures if unsoftened. Just personal preference, of course, but I'd say try a faucet-mount PUR or equivalent--$25 or so at the local big box. Even if you're softening your water you probably want to filter your drinking water anyway.
