: I have an old bathtub installed in 1965. My drain up and down lever broke in the closed position. I took out the screws and removed the level and the whole thing came out the hole. The drain is stuck in the closed position. I don't need the lever as I always take a shower. How do I get the drain open? Thank you.

The picture on the right shows an overflow trip lever waste with a plunger that may have become disconnected from the linkage in your case or the bathtub drain is just clogged and needs to be snaked and cleaned.
If the plunger is in fact stuck in the overflow, you need to fish it out with a wire with a hook at the end. Have patience.
