First, make sure the water level in the tank is where it should be, and the chain to the flapper is connected properly to allow for a complete flush.

Second, make sure that there has not been some small item flushed and is stuck out of sight.\

The other advice is very good also, do not use a coat hanger.

: We have a new Carrolton that we use a lot and a new Dartmouth that we use occasionally. (Both are Totos, rate high on the low flow toilet list.) In 3.5 months, the Carrolton has stopped up twice, for no apparent reason, and has required using a coathanger to unplug. It seems to be solid waste, not paper, plugging it. This is actually as bad a record as my old toilet. And of course it has the problem of not always washing down completely. Any advice?
