: I know nothing about plumbing.. At the moment, the toilet won't flush, and there is very little water in the holding tank. I've tried fiddling with all of the parts -- but they seem intact and connected. Can I just add water to the tank, and see if that solves the problem? What should be done in the long run?
If there is no water in the tank, the toilet will not flush. You can actually flush a toilet by pouring water directly into the bowl.
The most common cause of this is debris in the fill valve that prevents the water from entering the tank. If you are uncomfortable working on your plumbing, call a plumber. In the meantime, fill a bucket from the tub and flush your toilet with this.
