Quite often you can, with two caveats. First there were some old valves with a coarse thread and the new valves will not accept the old nut, and second, if the old valve was tightened excessively, the tubing could be damaged, in which case you may not be able to tighten the new valve sufficiently to prevent leaking.

: The shutoff handle won't move. The valve is connected to 1/2" copper with a compression fitting. Can I unscrew the old valve at the compression fitting and install a new one using the old compression ring?
